Generator Safety Refresher

It's ok to store your generator in the garage, but NEVER operate it indoors, even in the garage!
Many homeowners rely on portable generators when the power goes out to keep the lights and heat on in the winter. Safety is key when operating a generator.
If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:
- Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
- To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure, such as under a tarp held up on poles.
- Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
- Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can’t be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately. If you experience severe symptoms, call 911.
- Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

A quick refresher on the dangers of carbon monoxide might be another piece of the puzzle in this decision.
You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels, it can kill a person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide (or CO) is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels, like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, and propane burn incompletely. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, each year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. It is estimated another 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning, with some groups— including unborn babies, infants and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems— being more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide.
An excess of CO, leading to CO poisoning, can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryers or idling cars left running in garages. Taking some basic, precautionary steps can help eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself by reviewing the following tips provided by the United States Fire Administration.
• Have fuel-burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected by a trained professional every year.
• Open the damper for proper ventilation before using a fireplace. Never use your oven or stove-top to heat your home.
• Make sure all fuel-burning equipment is vented to the outside to avoid CO poisoning. Keep the venting for exhaust clear and unblocked.
• If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Never run a vehicle or other fueling engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not blocked with snow, ice, or other materials.
• Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris.
• Only use barbecue grills outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Some grills can produce CO gas. Never use grills inside the home or the garage, even if the doors are open.
• Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home.

In this period of sheltering at home, many of us have extra time on our hands. This is the perfect time to organize a family emergency plan if we haven’t already done so. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), these are the first 4 steps that need to be addressed:
- How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
- What is my shelter plan?
- What is my evacuation route?
- What is my family/household communication plan?

Stay at Home . During the current pandemic, we are being advised to stay at home to reduce transmission of the virus and flatten the curve of serious illnesses that could all at once inundate our healthcare system. If we decide to take walks, ride bikes or venture out into the community for an essential reason, we must practice social distancing by remaining 6 feet away from others.

In our last blog we talked about emergency preparedness and shelter. Today we will move on to Family Communication Plans.
Here are the basics, according to Department of Homeland Security.
Collect emergency contact information for every member of your family and print a copy for purses, wallets and backpacks just in case there is no telephone or wireless communication available. Include phone numbers for your doctors, schools and service providers. Distribute a copy to each family member.
Share by distributing a copy to each family member. If you feel comfortable uploading the information to ready.gov, you can get a wallet-sized printable card for everyone in your household. Go here: ready.gov/make-a-plan
Practice. Have regular family meetings to practice your communication plan. No one need panic in any disaster if you already know what to do!

Wireless Emergency Alerts

At any time, but especially in a time of uncertainty on the local or national level, it is of utmost importance that we receive pertinent information in a timely manner. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are free notifications delivered to your mobile device as part of a public safety system provided by authorized government-alerting authorities. The alerts are designed to inform you of imminent threats to safety or missing persons alerts in your area (e.g., AMBER Alerts). Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service. A WEA can be sent to your mobile device when you may be in harm’s way, without downloading an app or subscribing to a service. WEAs may be used to share extreme weather warnings, local emergencies requiring evacuation or immediate action, AMBER Alerts, and Presidential Alerts during a national emergency.
A WEA will look like a text message. The WEA message will typically show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert. In Morris County, we have a unique emergency alert system with pertinent emergency information for our local community. However, please re-register with AlertMorris to be sure you are receiving all pertinent alerts.

Celebrating and Reflecting....15 Years!

This year, we will be celebrating 15 years since we opened our doors and sent our technicians and trucks out on the road for the first time. It is a time for celebration, but also of reflection. One of our first jobs when we opened our doors involved an elderly woman living in a house with 37 cats (dead and alive). No family member had checked on her for some time. She suffered a medical incident which caused her family to finally remove her to a nursing home. Then came the clean-up effort in order to get her house on the market. Not an easy task! And yes, the smell.
SERVPRO of North Morris County was called upon to check out the property to see if anything could be done. The odor was so strong it lingered in the air outside the home and in the neighborhood. Clothed in Tyvek suits and respirators, our team tackled the difficult task of inspecting the home and coming up with a plan of action. Where many other contractors may have knocked the house down and started again, our crew worked tirelessly to get this property back to livable condition.
It was a long and arduous project, but the job was completed. The woman’s family was grateful for a job well done and was able to put the house on the market “Like it never even happened.” If you walked into that home today, you would never know its history! Fireworks Safety

It will soon be fireworks season! According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an average of 18,500 fires are started every year by fireworks.
This includes 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside and other fires. “These fires caused an average of three deaths, 40 civilian injuries, and an average of $43 million in direct property damage,” says the NFPA.
SERVPRO of North Morris County asks "Do you think sparklers are the safe way to go?" The answer is "Nope: they account for about a fourth of emergency room fireworks injuries".

10 Things You Should Know About MOLD – Part 2 of 2

When we last looked at MOLD, we reviewed part 1 0f 2 points 1-5. They included potential health effects, controlling it, when it may be a problem, prevention and its relationship to humidity. Today, we'll go onto to parts 6-10.
6. 48 HOURS - After a wtaer intrusion has occurred, if it goes unaddressed, it is possible that mold can begin to form within 48-72 hours. All it needs is a "food source" (wood, drywall, insulation paper, etc). Unmitigated, and you could end up with a big problem.
7. Mold & Surfaces - There are two types of surfaces; Hard and Porous. A hard surface can be cleaned and dried. A porous surface, such as drywall, may very well need to be removed.
8. Condensation - Again, condensation IS moisture. Whenever possible, address this issue ASAP. If you see it forming on windows, exterior walls, a roof or really any surface, eliminating it could save you a lot of headaches later.
9. A Word About Carpeting - In an area where there is a moisture issue (i.e. - cracking concrete floors, below ground basements with a high water table), it is best to avoid carpet and pad. Subfloors and vapor barriers are a good idea.
10. Mold Is EVERYWHERE - But there are acceptable levels and unacceptable. But when there's a water intrusion, it is the "food Sources" that do the most damage.
