When the call came in that Tuesday evening, the Rockaway area hotel manager was understandably stressed out. The boiler from the fifth floor utility room had blown and water was going "everywhere".

It had migrated from the fifth floor, to the fourth and stopped it's travel on the third. All-in-all, there where nine rooms and two common hallways flooded.

The crew arrived in less than 90 minutes to start emergency services. Due to the construction of the hotel rooms, no tear out, only drying needed to be performed in them. However, the long, common hallway walls were soaked.

The manager was concerned that if the wet portion of the walls were cut, not only would there need to be repairs, but the ENTIRE hallway would need to be re-wallpapered.

As you can see by the picture, a little ingenuity alleviated those concerns. Most restoration companies would have just cut, but SERVPRO of North Morris County removed the trim and carefully peeled back the wallpaper, then pinned it up so as to dry the wall. Later, the wallpaper was re-attached.

The dry out was successful and repair costs were minimized leaving one happy hotel manager!

Do Garage Roofs Matter?

Neglected roof leak leads to mold issue in a commercial garage.

When it comes down to business, many owners spend money where it counts and often neglect or overlook smaller matters, like the garage.  Perhaps the owner is the only one with access to the garage, or several select employees.  Who cares what the garage looks like?  The garage isn’t the money maker, but in many cases, it stores your fleet, your valuable construction equipment and possibly even materials for your next client.  The garage, and any storage area, is an important place in your business that requires regular inspection. 

In this particular instance, the garage roof of this small business had a leak.  Over time and neglect, it led to a larger leak that seeped in and damaged the roof which in turn damaged ceiling sheetrock.  When the staining became noticeable, the owner replaced a small bit of the sheetrock without addressing the water and moisture issue.  He had the roof repaired but neglected to dry out the ceiling cavity before replacing the sheetrock.  When the moisture in the cavity produced mold across the ceiling, the business owner knew it was time to call in the mold professionals at SERVPRO of North Morris County to mitigate the damage.

Roof leaks, no matter how small or insignificant they initially seem, can lead to big damage if they are not properly repaired in a timely manner.

You Need To Handle The Situation

October can be scary, and not only if you are in the Halloween business!  Halloween is on the 31st, so social media, the news, retail businesses, and horror movies are all filled with pumpkins, spice and ghosts.  For business and homeowners alike, the “Ghost of Halloween Past” conjures up images of  the freak October snowstorm experienced by all of us in North Morris County not all that long ago.  Most business owners in the area were hit hard by hurricane Irene in 2011, and then right on its tail came the 2011 Halloween nor'easter which we all, no doubt, remember.  “Shocktober” was a large low pressure area that produced unusually early snowfall across the northeastern United States and the Canadian Maritimes.  As it moved up the East Coast, its associated snowfall broke records in at least 20 cities for total accumulations, resulting in a rare "white Halloween" two days later.

The storm arrived just two months after Hurricane Irene caused extensive power outages and property damage in the Northeast. It dumped snow on trees that were often still in leaf, adding extra weight, with the ground in some areas still soft from a preceding warm, rainy period that increased the possibility trees could be uprooted. Trees and branches that collapsed caused considerable damage, particularly to power lines, with estimates of storm costs ranging between $1 billion and $3 billion. In all, 3.2 million U.S. residences and businesses [7] in 12 states experienced power outages, with the storm also impacting three Canadian provinces. [1]

Many homes and businesses in North Morris County and surrounding areas were without power for a week!  Let this serve as a reminder to us all that we can experience severe weather every month of the year causing disruption to business and home life.
